The Magnificent Eight, a mural from San Diego, California

The Magnificent Eight – Daily Photo

The Magnificent Eight is what I’m calling this San Diego mural. I’ve no idea what it was really called or who it was by and I doubt it exists today. I took it in 1995 or 1996 in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. The frame before contains the Embassy Suites and looks like it was taken from the vicinity of what is now Ruocco Park. The two frames after were taken at 5th and J. But all three of […]

Joyce Davis 1930 - 1916

Joyce Davis 1930 – 2016

Yesterday my mother passed away. She was 86. The last years of her life were stolen from her and her family by dementia. It was little things at first but they grew over time. Cutlery put away in the wrong drawers, groceries in the airing cupboard, the grill pan put away in the grill with the gas still on burning the handle. We disconnected the stove and added a microwave, meals were brought to her three times per day until […]

Sailors shopping for rings at The Silver Lining, San Diego

The Silver Lining – Daily Photo

The Silver Lining was a jewelry cart in the Westfield Horton Plaza in San Diego. In this photo, three sailors peruse rings. Well, two of them do. The other seems to be gazing at the ear rings. Modern-day wanna-be pirates? I didn’t hang around long enough to know if they actually bought something. This cart was in an open walkway that splits the plaza diagonally. I don’t remember it being windy so I’m not sure why the sailor in the […]

Black Door Lemon Wall, French Quarter, Louisiana, USA

Black Door Lemon Wall – Daily Photo

‘Black Door Lemon Wall’ is a photo I took while wandering around the French Quarter in New Orleans. The warm colors of the buildings come from the creole heritage of the region. The term ‘creole’ denotes people born in the region or descended from people born in the region rather than colonists born in their mother country or first generation immigrants. For New Orleans this includes a mix of French, Spanish, and ‘free people of color’. They all shared a […]

Carmel Mission

Carmel Mission – Daily Photo

From yesterday’s photo of the church of the Immaculate Conception in San Diego to the Carmel Mission, up the coast aways in Carmel. The missions in California are all tied to the work of the Franciscan friar, Junipero Serra, who was beatified in 1998 and canonized in 2015. The Mission Carmel marked the northern outpost of the Spanish in Californa. The Mission Carmel dates from 1771, Serra having relocated it from the original site in Monterey. This was Serra’s base […]
