Pump It, not the song by the Black Eyed Peas, but oil. When I was looking at this photo that song was running through my mind, though. Oil closed above $40 a barrel yesterday for the first time in 2016, extending the rally since the low of $26.21 per barrel on February 11, 2016. There have been massive layoffs across the industry over the last year and they’re continuing this year. The industry has lost more US jobs over the […]
Sometimes a sign is too good to pass up. When I passed the ‘Death Valley Health Center’ sign in Shoshone I just had to pull over and capture an image. It reminded me of a sign I once saw in Bennington, Vermont (I’ve yet to scan that one so will save it for a future post). I think it was the juxtaposition of the phrases ‘Death Valley’ and ‘Health Center’ that struck me as somewhat ironic. The name of the […]
The Empty Chair is a recurring theme throughout literature. I think I first became aware of it when I studied Macbeth at High School. It appears during the banquet in Act 3, Scene 4. All the guests see and empty chair but when Macbeth looks at the chair he sees the ghost of Banquo sitting there. In Arthurian legend, Merlin reserved the ‘Siege Perilous’ at the round table for the knight who would one day find the Holy Grail. The […]
‘The only way is up’ wrote Johnny Henderson and George Jackson. I wondered if they’d stood at the foot of the Key West Lighthouse and pondered the climb. It’s not that tall, 73 ft (22m) officially, and the spiral staircase has only 88 steps. But it’s iron, and it wobbles. Of course, once you’re at the top, the only way is down. I was taught at a young age that when climbing you should stick to the inside when passing […]
The Zabriskie Sunrise, that time of day when the sun directly illuminates Manly Beacon and the badlands that surround it. Its a very short walk from the parking lot, up the hill, to the viewing area at Zabriskie Point but most people walk a little further for even better views. Manly Beacon is the peak in the midground on the right of the frame. Here you can see the direct sunlight creeping it’s way down the Panamint range on the […]
Post Oak Reflection is an image of the facades of townhouses at 3050 Post Oak in Houston, reflected in the pond across the street. The ripples in the water were driven by a light breeze, aided by the resident ducks. I had to wait a while for the ducks to leave the scene and I was aided in that by a child and his guardian who came to feed them a short distance to my left and out of the […]
