The sun has slipped below the horizon of the South China Sea in this photo taken in 1989 from Laban Rata on Mount Kinabalu. On the right you can make out the island of Pulau Gaya and the three smaller islands of Pulau Manukan just to the south (left). On the shoreline lies the town of Kota Kinabalu invisible in the haze. A fellow hiker shoots the sun setting over the South China Sea from the helipad at Laban Rata. Mount Kinabalu. 1989.

Daily Photo – Shooting the Sunset at Laban Rata

In the photo below a fellow traveler is capturing the sun setting into the South China Sea as we watched from the helipad at Laban Rata. The humidity hangs in the valleys in a purple haze. Just below the sun you can make out the coastline. It was strange for me to think that 48 hours previously I’d been at sea level in Miri, Sarawak and now here I was at 11,000 feet watching the sun descend.
