Daily Photo – The Way Out

In most cases, the way out of a hong is just the reverse of the way in but some have more than one route.

In today's photo, fellow tourists are being paddled out of the hong and back to open water by their guide.

The inflatable provide much better stability than rigid . This is a pretty important factor in the caves where the is often encrusted with barnacles and other creatures that would rip you open if you were to capsize into them! You can see from the next to the just how rough it is.

The caves are tidal and many are only accessible at low water. This either limits the time the amount of time you have to explore the hong else traps you inside for half a day while you wait for the next low water mark. John Gray's Sea Canoes also offer starlight tours. Though I never did one, I think the concept is pretty neat.
