Daily Photo – Last Mulu Cave Photo

Today's photo will be my last from my 1989 trip to the Gunung Mulu National Park in . It's another photo. Yay!

As with yesterday's photo, if I were taking this today I'd be using off- to provide more interesting shadows and bring out the texture of the stone.

This photo was taken close by the location of yesterday's flowstone photo. One feature in this photo that I remain curious about is the small curtain-like calcite growth from the floor that separates the pools of water. My inner geologist and caver don't have answers for that one so any ideas would be appreciated.

The main feature in the center of the image shows where the stalactite hanging off the above has joined with the stalagmites growing up from below to form small, connected, pillars. Yet the still have a curtain-like quality to them, the leftmost of the three in particular.

The stalagmite in the lower right corner looks like a mini volcano. Indeed, where the drips from the ceiling above land in the center of this stalagmite there's a marked depression and a channel off to the right. So this stalagmite is growing from the splatter made when the next drip lands.

Another section of flowstone from one of the show caves in the Gunung Mulu National Park. I remain intrigued by the calcite curtain that appears to be growing up from the floor in the bottom of the photo.
