Selamat Datang is Malay for ‘Welcome'. This is the landing at Kampong Bukit Linea – or at least, this was how the landing looked in 1989.
We were headed down the Tutoh River from Long Terawan to kuala Baram via Marudi and several other stops like this. Kampong Bukit Linea lies between Long Terawan and Marudi on the Tutoh river near the confluence with the Linea river (go figure).
The couple here appear to be taking some produce downriver. The clothes they are wearing seem somewhat at odds with the state of the landing which looks as though it's in need of repair. Other members of their community look on from below the welcome sign. The boardwalk below the welcome station hints at how high the river gets when it floods.
The shack on the landing is a fuel depot for the longboats of the community. What I still fund curious is that ‘Slow Down' is written in English. I only ever saw locals driving boats on the rivers. Maybe they determined ‘Melambatkan' wouldn't fit in large enough letters to be visible until it was too late. Or maybe they determined it was only English reading explorers that were speeding on the rivers.
