Daily Photo – Urban Renewal

Since posting yesterday's photo I've been poring over Google Maps of Lumpur trying to figure out where I took the photos. I recall I ate at the Station the night I was there and that I walked, so that put me somewhere in Chinatown.

Today's photo has better clued me in because of the unique architecture of the building in the background. It's the Komplex Daya Bumi. The relationship with the building on the right puts me somewhere on Jalan Panggong between the intersection with Lorong Panggung to my north and Jalan Balai Polis to my south. My angle of view is to the north-west.

Today's photo shows the inside of the block under demolition. It's somewhat curious that the street facades were left in place while everything behind them was razed and carted off to be disposed of.

So I started looking around the location for the buildings in yesterday's photo and found them! The tall blue and white building is the Wisma Tun Sambanthan building. So yesterday's photo is a view to the south from just around the corner from the location of today's photo which was somewhere along Jalan Balai Polis. Putting all this together suggests I stayed in a low rent on Jalan Sultan which in turn, according to my copy of ‘South East Asia on a Shoesting' (Tony Wheeler, Lonely Planet, 6th edition, February 1989) means it highly likely that my also rented rooms by the hour!

So based on this location, they seem to have replaced this city block with the Ocean Shopping Center and a parking lot! See linked Google Map for location. Google translates ‘Balai Polis' to Police Station and it looks from the architecture that they expanded the police station in this area having torn down the old buildings. But given the description in my guide book of the era, while they put up a parking lot, it was hardly a paradise that they paved.
