As a farewell, of sorts, to my series of southern Florida, I present two versions of the sun set from our room on the 15th floor of the Hotel Sofitel, miami.
Our suite on the 15th floor had great views to the west but there were some downsides to the hotel. It's just across the freeway from miami International Airport so depending on the direction of the traffic you can be kept awake by aircraft noise. The other downside is that without a car you're captive – there's nothing within walking distance of the hotel.
Fortunately I'd rented a Mercedes for my trip. Indeed, we'd flown into Fort Lauderdale because it's only 30 minutes away and a much smaller airport. In all my years of traveling, I've found the smaller airports to be more friendly and personable.
On a weekday morning, the freeway on the right of the photo is just solid with traffic heading into downtown miami but late on a Saturday afternoon the road was virtually empty. Color version first, black and white interpretation below.
