The crowds start to assemble along the several hours before the parade is due to arrive. If you're visiting, you can check out the parade schedules ahead of time.

I'd love to know who invented the parade ladder but I suspect that many will claim the title and all will be correct. These six-foot painters have a box mounted on top that you can seat your toddler in. There's a locking bar to keep them in place. During the parade a parent stands on the ladder. This not only provides stability but allows you to catch throws that are going too high for your child and to protect your child from throws that are coming directly at them. Often, parade watching can become a competitive sport with both offensive and defensive moves.

The wheels on the boxes allow the owner to push it too and from the parade like wheel barrow. Often you'll see people load up their coolers, chairs and other accoutrements as it's the easiest way to get things from and to your card which in all probability is several blocks away.
