Green Shutters is an image I captured while wandering with my wife in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans in July 2017. The building itself is on Decatur Street near the intersection with Frenchman Street. We had started our meanderings in the French Quarter and the French Market. Our destination was the St. Roch Market for lunch. In the evening, (in non-pandemic times) the area around Decatur and Frenchman is pulsating with nightlife – food and music course through […]
I was playing around with an image I captured of a St. Peter Street balcony in Photoshop (CC 2015.5) today, messing around with some filters when the image went berzerkoid on me. I’m actually intrigued by the way my image was morphed by the software so I decided to keep it and post it here. Below it you’ll find what I was actually trying to get to. I usually try to compose all my images both vertically and horizontally if […]
‘Black Door Lemon Wall’ is a photo I took while wandering around the French Quarter in New Orleans. The warm colors of the buildings come from the creole heritage of the region. The term ‘creole’ denotes people born in the region or descended from people born in the region rather than colonists born in their mother country or first generation immigrants. For New Orleans this includes a mix of French, Spanish, and ‘free people of color’. They all shared a […]
Today’s photo is of a New Orleans French Quarter Door. Or is is a window? This is one of four similar doors at 612 Dauphine. I was drawn to its weathered appearance, as though its had a hard life and been neglected for many years, shown no love or tenderness, a silent witness to all that has passed before and through it. According to Realtor.com 612 Dauphine is an 1,811 sq ft single family home built in 1916, was listed […]
Reverend Zombies House of Voodoo can be found at 723 St. Peter Street in the New Orleans French Quarter. I’ve never been inside but it has rave reviews on the internet. Apparently, New Orleans Voodoo is rooted in West African Dahomeyan Vodun, and mixed with elements from French, Spanish and Creole cultures. Nope, I don’t really know what that means either. New Orleans voodoo is related to but distinct from Haitian Vodou. The Reverend Zombies House of Voodoo is owned […]
So today is Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, Carnival. In 2012, Will Ferrell was the King of the Bacchus parade in New Orleans (who roll through uptown on the Sunday before Mardi Gras). This is my favorite photo of when he rolled by and I think a fitting way to celebrate the day. According to the International Business Times, Shrove comes from shrive meaning to confess while Carnival derives from ‘carne levare’ meaning ‘to take away meat’. In Poland, […]
