Daily Photo – Block 335B

Block 335B, Smith Street, Chinatown, Singapore. August 11, 1989.

Block 335B towers over Chinatown, Singapore. Located on Smith Street, between South Bridge Road and New Bridge Road, I took this photo of the western face of the building from around the intersection of Pagoda Street and New Bridge Road.

Clearly the laundry-pole-out-the-window is a local cultural thing. If you take a Google Street View drive by you’ll see that even though the building has had a coat of paint or two in the intervening years, the habit of placing the laundry on a pole out the window still holds strong. I wonder what happens if you lose a garment? On a street like Pagoda Street you could probably find it in the street but if it comes off one of those poles from Block 335B, it could almost end up anywhere!

Unlike Pagoda street, though, there’s a dearth of Singapore national flags flying from these windows.

If you’re wondering, block 335A sits out of frame to the right.

Pagoda Street, Singapore, August 1989. Today this street appears to be a pedestrian street. At the end of Pagoda Street is South Bridge Road. On the left is the Jamee Mosque and on the right is the Sri Mariamman Temple (not that you can make them out in this photo).

Another example of how Singapore has changed in the last 20 years. This is how the Battery area of Singpore looks in 1989 with the Singapore river flowing under the bridge at right and the Merlion overlooking the confluence of the Singapore River and Kalleng River.

    • Hi Ardun,

This is a scan from a slide. I first adjusted the clarity, blacks and whites, and perspective in Lightroom 4.2 and then applied two adjustments, one using Topaz Detail 3 and the second using Topaz Adjust 5. I then blended all three together in Photoshop CS6 to arrive at the final image.

You can still get 30% off any of the Topaz products today if you click the banner link and enter the coupon code ‘ getdetail ‘ at checkout. Today is the last day of this promotion. You get a 30-day trial period.
