Daily Photo – Flags Over Pagoda Street

The Singapore State Flag and a load of laundry fly above Pagoda Street, Singapore, August, 1989.

It took me a little sleuthing by looking at other photos in proximity to the one below but I finally pinned it down to Pagoda Street, Singapore. My elevated position comes from my standing on an overpass over New Bridge Road when I took this shot. This particular string of houses is on the north side of the street.

At top the Singapore National Flag is proudly displayed. I’ll post another image in a day or two that shows pretty much every property flying the national flag. Perhaps this was some special day that I, in my usual idiom, was ignorant of.

Below the official flag of the state flies the unofficial flag – the daily laundry. No hiding the unmentionables here! Rather, everything is put out on display for everyone to see.

I find the detail on these terrace or row houses to be quite interesting. Clearly these houses had seen better days but the detail on the columns is quite ornate, perhaps implying that at the time they were built, relatively wealthy people lived here – perhaps the clerks and middle managers rather than the stevedores and navvies.

Pagoda Street, Singapore, August 1989. Today this street appears to be a pedestrian street. At the end of Pagoda Street is South Bridge Road. On the left is the Jamee Mosque and on the right is the Sri Mariamman Temple (not that you can make them out in this photo).
