The very first camp move I participated in back in 1984 was described by one of my colleagues as being like ‘Wacky Races' the old cartoon show.
If we were traveling along the highway or a graded track, we'd drive in convoy but out in the open desert that discipline broke down. Our sand storm move in the Calanscio sand Sea was of the Wacky Races variety.
If you compare this shot with my shot from a couple of days ago, you'll notice the order of the trucks and Land Rovers has changed which supports the Wacky Races analogy. For example, in that shot the white MAN 6×6 appears to be leading and is being followed by three Land Rovers. In this shot there are no Land Rovers, the white MAN 6×6 is following three Bedfords towing trailers and is followed by another Bedford and then another MAN.
Of course, these trucks at most are doing 30 mph (50 kph) – not exactly the stuff of land speed records.
Again, the horizon has to be guessed at, the visibility is perhaps a mile.
On the plus side as a photographer, the light has a wonderfully warm, diffuse quality. The fine sand blowing around however risks ruining lenses and you can forget about changing lenses!
At least this was back in the film days so i didn't have to worry about dust on the sensor but more than one of my films have sand scores that run pretty much the entire length of the reel.
It's kind of funny that at the time they were taken, those scratches made those pictures pretty much useless but now with digital it's relatively simple to make those scratches disappear.
