Daily Photo – Loh Dalam Refractions

My undergrad was in Physics with Geophysics so the geophysics and the optics classes in the physics part of the course taught me bunches about refraction. Then, for over a decade in the world of seismic exploration I worked with and analyzed refractions all day long. So when I was reviewing my slides a while back I got reacquainted with this beauty from Loh Dalam Bay in Koh Phi Phi Don. Taken from the lookout on the eastern part of the , the ship is beached on the that joins the two parts of the . The water here was really shallow – the two people on the right of the image are actually sitting down at this point, not standing. The varying depths of the water and the light ripples of the breeze driven waves are refracting the to give the rainbow effect of this image. Again, most probably shot with the 500mm mirror lens I had back then on Fuji Provia 100 ISO film.
