The Maine Event – Day Four

So my Maine Event came to a close today in a damp and soggy fashion. It was raining quite hard before sun up so I turned off the alarm and went back to sleep. This was probably a mistake but I’ll never know for sure. When I did leave Belfast at around 10:00 it wasn’t really raining but the cloud hugged the ground and the sounds of the fog horns drifted in through the fog.[ad name=”post”] Because of my late […]

The Maine Event – Day Three

So here we are, Day Three. I haven’t found a better WordPress app so I’m stuck with the eponymous app and hoping I don’t touch the wrong place on the screen and lose everything again.. I’ve set the auto save to every minute so we’ll see how that goes. Overnight it rained. Bar Harbor was pretty near dead, storefront after storefront posting signs reading “Closed for the Season. See you in May”. Well er, no, you won’t.[ad name=”post”] I headed […]

The Maine Event – Day Two

So now I’m not liking this WordPress app for the iPad. It just lost my almost completed post! Just lost it a second time, need to find a better app! Last week the weather was supposed to be sunny and cold. Now I’m here it’s supposed to be wet and mild. I sped up I-95, bypassing some wonderful color in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and lower Maine, but as I drove further north the colors paled and […]

Hurricane Katrina

Five years ago this morning, hurricane Katrina made landfall near the Louisiana-Mississippi border as at Category 3 with sustained winds at 120 mph. With my wife’s family hailing from New Orleans, hurricane Katrina changed all of our lives in ways we never anticipated. These photos were take on May 28, 2006, some eight months after the storm. Most of these were taken in the 9th Ward, just a few blocks from the breach in the walls of the Industrial Canal. […]

Hobby Airport

I recently flew from Houston to New Orleans on Southwest Airlines, just so I could have the pleasure of driving from New Orleans back to Houston the following day. I’ve spent many days driving Houston and New Orleans along I-10,  less so since Katrina, but I digress. I like Houston’s Hobby Airport. It’s close to downtown, it’s compact, and it’s friendly. There is only the one public terminal and the security line runs efficiently. I used to love the experience […]
