This image is of the memorial to Captain John Clark. Clark was a Civil War veteran who moved to California after the end of the war. He was found dead under his wagon on June 15, 1915, near this spot.

Despite the austere times of the Great Depression, public art works were still funded. Across the road from the Hoover Dam Visitor Center one finds the twin Winged Figures of the Republic by sculptor Oskar J.W. Hansen. Each figure is 30 feet tall.
