Pump It, not the song by the Black Eyed Peas, but oil. When I was looking at this photo that song was running through my mind, though. Oil closed above $40 a barrel yesterday for the first time in 2016, extending the rally since the low of $26.21 per barrel on February 11, 2016. There have been massive layoffs across the industry over the last year and they’re continuing this year. The industry has lost more US jobs over the […]
Post Oak Reflection is an image of the facades of townhouses at 3050 Post Oak in Houston, reflected in the pond across the street. The ripples in the water were driven by a light breeze, aided by the resident ducks. I had to wait a while for the ducks to leave the scene and I was aided in that by a child and his guardian who came to feed them a short distance to my left and out of the […]
Today is Ash Wednesday, the traditional start of Lent. Many observant Christians forgo some luxury for Lent and for many, particularly Catholics, giving up meat is quite common. The English word Lent derives from Lenten which means ‘spring’. So, in a roundabout way, this photo of a deer with bluebonnets represents both meat and spring. The bluebonnet is the Texas State Flower and in a few weeks time the fields to the north-west of where I live will be full […]
It’s been a while since any Mobil Regular flowed through these pumps. Their rusted, worn appearance contrasts with the spruced up former gas and service station behind them. Google Maps now lists this (at time of writing) as “Miss Vickie’s Emporium”. It was closed on the Sunday afternoon in March when I passed through.
I thought this was just a faded advertisement for the Star Biscuit Co. when I photographed it. I thought it was a faded sign of the times, an indication of the decline of small towns in rural America. But I was fooled. The sign was a prop, a backdrop for a scene in the 1998 movie, Hope Floats. Star Biscuit Co., Leading Brand Of The World, a brand I’d never heard of anywhere in the world which had me reaching […]
I’ve always been fascinated by tall buildings. Today’s daily photo is of 811 Main St. Houston, TX at night, taken during a photowalk a couple of years back. With some of the stars in the night sky visible at the top of the frame, I can imagine this view as looking along one of those futurist massive spacecraft you see in movies like Star Wars. I half expect to see some X-wing fighters streaking along this channel hotly pursued by […]
