The Bass Harbor Head Light is perhaps the most photographed of the Maine lighthouses. Built in 1858, this lighthouse marks the entrance to Blue Hill Bay and warns mariners of the Bass Harbor bar at the eastern entrance to the harbor. Located at the southwestern point of Mt. Desert Island this lighthouse is easily accessible. I took a marked trail from the parking lot that leads down to these boulders but I had a bit of a scramble to get […]
The Curtis Island Light marks the south side of Camden Harbor, Maine. Built in 1896. this light replaces a light built in 1835 by order of President Jackson. I took this photo several years ago and feel lucky to have been able to do so. The weather wasn’t brilliant the day I drove by. It had started out quite foggy but the cloud had started to lift by the time I got to this destination. There’s no public land on […]
I woke this morning to a sombre grey day. It’s fall here in the USA and it’s not just the political season that is changing. That woke me up to the fact that it’s not just the political season that is changing in the USA. It’s been harder to tell than usual here on the Texas Gulf Coast. The regular season of High School Football (rent Friday Night Lights if you’ve not seen it) has come to a close with […]
Lobsters and Lighthouses, two excellent reasons to visit Maine. This is the Marshall Point Lighthouse which signals the eastern side of the southern entrance to Port Clyde harbor. In the mid 1800’s, Port Clyde was a major port with shipbuilding facilities and fish canning operations as well as supporting the shipping of granite from local quarries. Today it’s the home of the wonderfully named ‘Herring Gut Learning Center‘ which is a vital educational resource to the surrounding community. Love the […]
The Chandler River at twilight. When I took this I was on my way to Lubec, the easternmost settlement in the United States. I was a tad concerned as I’d not been able to raise any of the B&Bs in Lubec on my phone during the day as I drove up from Boston. It was a semi planned trip but it was only when I was in the car that I decided to go all the way to Lubec then […]
Unlike yesterday’s image, this one took a bit more effort. I didn’t see the abandoned row-boat when I pulled the car off the road, just the inlet. It was as I was trying to get a better perspective on the inlet that I spied the boat in the weeds. I had to scramble down a muddy hillside, navigate some thorny bushes and cross a small stream to get the boat in the foreground of my shot. All of which left […]
