Daily Photo – Red Umbrella

A villager carries a Red Umbrella to shiled her from the sun, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Here’s another ‘street’ image I took on Koh Phi Phi Don. I was most likely wandering around the isthmus in search or food, or beer, or both. There use to be lots of shacks where you could get a good, cheap meal pretty much any time of day. Two locals walk along a trail in the early afternoon hours. Personally I’ve never been a big fan of umbrellas, neither in the rain nor the sun. I prefer hats with wide brims so that I can keep both my hands free. One challenge as a photographer though is if the brim is too stiff, I always seem to knock the hat off my head when I bring my camera to my eye. If I’m wearing a baseball or golf cap then I usually turn it back-to-front when shooting but this summer I bought a jungle hat that has a much softer brim that just pushes out of the way. In the rain I usually prefer just a hood or a hat again, or just getting wet. As I keep telling my kids, one of the functions of skin is to stop your insides dissolving in the rain!
