Daily Photo – Mother and Son

A son walks with his mother. Chinatown, Singapore, 1989.

I had all sorts of great plans for changes for the new year that I was going to make after Christmas. Instead, despite my flu shot, I got the flu so all those plans are on hold and I’ll soldier on as before for a while longer.

Picking up where I left off on December 23rd, today’s photo is another taken in Chinatown in Singapore in 1989. It’s a pretty ordinary street scene. A young man walks down the street accompanied by his mother. They pass workers having lunch in the cafe’s. They’re forced to walk in the road because the sidewalk was seized long ago by the cafe and store owners to expand their mini empires. Indeed, in the center of the photo you’ll notice the archway has been bricked up.

What this meant, of course, was that everyone got wet when it rained – you could no longer hurry down the street along the once-covered walkways.

If you look closely you can see two birds sitting in a cage hung outside a window in this picture of a street in Chinatown, Singapore, taken in 1989. There's also an electric fan sung outside a window to provide a drying breeze in case nature fails to.
