Heading Up River

Upon arrival in Brunei I had to apply for a work permit. As in most countries, this was not a snappy process so every 30 days until it came in we had to do a border run. Later we’d run to Miri but for my first run, our Mr. Fixit decided we needed to go to Limbang, in Sarawak, Malaysia. For this we drove from Kuala Belait to the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan and then took a water taxi. If my memory serves, there were just four of us plus the driver on this boat.

I was taken with the speed delivered by these twin, 2.6 liter, V6, 175 horse-power Yamaha outboards. That was, until our Mr. Fixit started telling stories about these boats hitting trees floating down-river. Fortunately that didn’t happen on this trip. I’d neglected to tell my employer I couldn’t swim and waited till I was in-country as otherwise I wouldn’t have qualified. During my year in Brunei I did learn to swim, and then to water ski, and then to dive.
