Daily Photo – Derelict House

A derelict house in the Chinatown district of Singapore, 1989.

I’ve spent a while on Google trying to place this house but I’ve not been able to. It’s probably long been replaced by a gleaming high rise.

I was struck by the relative maturity of the trees growing our of the brick work. Someone, probably the city, had erected a wooden safety screen around the base of the house but nothing appeared to have been done to remove the trees that were slowly separating the bricks. I wondered how much of the brickwork the wooden safety barrier was intended to contain, and even how sturdy the boards were. Would they hold a brick falling from the roof or would it plunge on through the boards and onto the sidewalk below?

Another example of how Singapore has changed in the last 20 years. This is how the Battery area of Singpore looks in 1989 with the Singapore river flowing under the bridge at right and the Merlion overlooking the confluence of the Singapore River and Kalleng River.

  1. Very nice. Here in Bangkok these types of old houses are disappearing fast. I much prefer the old historical buildings as opposed to the modern skyscrapers made of steel and glass.
