The Beach Paradise Hotel sits at the intersection of Ocean Drive and 6th Street in South Beach, miami. It was looking a tad beat down on the day I photographed it. The main awning the the left of the entrance was torn away while several of the awnings over the windows of the upper floor on both the front and side of the hotel we similarly ripped. The roof line has Spanish mission characteristics, though whatever use to hang in the hole in the wall has long since been taken down and several of the roof tiles are also missing.
The hotel is, however, home to an endangered species of communications equipment. Yes, that's at payphone on the side wall! When I first came to live in the States in 1995, payphones were everywhere. Every gas station had several and there were banks of them in hotels and at the airports. I remember attending conferences and during the breaks everyone would rush to the payphone to respond to the number flashing on their pager, including me. Not any more. Where there used to be masses of people facing the wall having hushed conversations, now everyone's out in the open conducting their conversations for everyone to hear. If only they actually had something interesting to say!
