Daily Photo – Temple Roof Detail

Detail of the roof of a Chinese Temple in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.

Just as gargoyles, carvings, engravings and tapestries in western churches tell stories so do the decorations on the roofs of Chinese Temples. Now I’ve no idea what the story is here but it looks pretty rip-roaring to me! I’m left wondering who is the man on the horse – presumably an emperor. He appears to be riding a hybrid horse-dragon. Like any artistic endeavor, I can only marvel at the craftsmen who labored in crafting and applying each figure and tile. Not a quick job by any means.
