Although I titled today's photos ‘Suzhou river Scene' they should perhaps more accurately be titled ‘Suzhou Canal Scene' for most of the waterways in Suzhou are canals and the straight lines of the banks in this scene look more canalish than riverish.
There seems to be some lane discipline going on here with the boats traveling in opposite directions training after one another and sticking to opposite sides of the canal.
It looks to me as though the boat on the extreme right of the frame has sunk – maybe it was overloaded?
In the color version I love the pop of red in the lady's umbrella.
