Does one ‘bale out’ or ‘bail out’? In this case, the man in the photo is bailing out as in he is using a pan to move water from a ditch. If I were a writer for the Guardian I’d probably be in hot water now as their style guide prefers the ‘bale’ spelling for removing water. But the Guardian is just wrong on this point. I took today’s photo, Threshing About, from a boat, steaming down the Li River in China. I’m not sure who had the harder job as the stalks of rice were being cut with a hand scythe by a woman I assumed to be this man’s wife. Whenever I look at this photo I think of the (near) timelessness in this view of a Li River Settlement.
It must seem like I’ve been hiding out for the last couple of weeks since my last post was back on the 9th.
Perhaps the last image I’ll post of these men on bamboo rafts on the Li River near Guilin in China.
I think we’ve all had that experience of knowing exactly where we put something and then not being able to find it there when we need it.
