Daily Photo – The Louvre Pyramid

I have to say, the Louvre pyramid has always been there for my visits – which means my first visit to the Louvre was after 1989.

Now it seems natural but I can imagine the controversy at the time it was awarded and constructed.

I serves as the main entrance to the Louvre museum. Underneath, a vast network of halls and passageways lead to the various of the museum and now there are to take you directly to the most major pieces – the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo – in the shortest possible time. It's as if the intent is to ensure a visit free from culture of any kind. I learned a long time ago to enter from the metro station and wait in line underground – at least in the summer months.

This photo was taken at about 11:00 pm on a Tuesday night in late July. In the background is the Ferris wheel in Les Tuileries park. At this time of year it's part of a small carnival park with rides and attractions that kept my kids happy for a few hours.

Off frame to the left, a is shooting a couple standing on the granite surrounding one of the reflecting pools. His assistant is holding a to light the couple. My guess is they were some form of asian fashion shoot, there being six models and two photographers working the scene but only with off-camera speedlites and available light.

Three people sit on a and converse in the glow from the pyramid while on the right of the frame, someone's flash has cast giant shadows onto the walls of the Louvre proper.
