I started my first real paying job in November of 1984 and flew out to Libya in December 1984. By the summer of 1985 I had some cash in my pocket and a desire to travel.

Of course, back then the only way I knew how to travel was backpacking around Europe, using the InterRail Pass. That you can still travel this way is fantastic, in my opinion. Get the Global Pass and you can ride through 30 countries in Europe.

We'd just hop a and go somewhere. In this case my buddies and I found ourselves in Gimmelwald in Switzerland.

We used to stay in Youth Hostels which were cheap, or sleep in rail stations, building sites, soccer fields and even someone's garden on one memorable night! Often our itineraries didn't make sense – we just wanted an 8-hour journey overnight so we could doze on the and save on the cost of a hostel, even though hostels didn't cost much.

We spend at few days on this trip in the Bernese Oberland, hiking around the many trails and enjoying the fantastic scenery.

Here, one of my traveling companions enjoys the fantastic scenery with the and Mönch forming the backdrop across the valley.
