The view above is the one I had ahead of me across Death Valley having exited Artist’s Drive canyon and making my way back to Route 178.
Great view of Artist’s Drive, Death Valley. This is the view you catch in your rear view mirror as you approach the end of the loop road. Blink and you’ll miss it!
A little further north on the West Side Road, I captured this view east across Badwater Basin of an alluvial fan at the base of a washout in the Amargosa Range that runs down the eastern side of Death Valley. This shot was taken with my Canon 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM (B&H) lens racked out to 300mm. As a consequence, the distance across the valley has been considerably compressed. This view of Death Valley was taken from near the intersection of the West Side Road and the track that leads up into Johnson Canyon. The rain was still falling but most of it seemed to be evaporating before getting to the ground. The zone of bright green bushes was in a slight depression that clearly captured more of the scant rainfall than the gravelly area immediately in front of me. So yesterday I posted a wide angle (17mm) shot of the Bowl of Fireand today I’m posting a detail. If you look at yesterday’s shot there are two outcrops of the red Aztec sandstone, one on either side of the frame. This is a detail from the right hand outcrop. This is a wide angle view of the Bowl of Fire. As the crow flies, it’s about 30 miles east of Las Vegas to the north side of Northshore Road in the Lake Mead National Recreational Area. While the work ‘fire’ might lead some to think it’s volcanic in origin, the red rocks are actually a sandstone that contrasts with the surrounding gray limestones.
