The sun has slipped below the horizon of the South China Sea in this photo taken in 1989 from Laban Rata on Mount Kinabalu. On the right you can make out the island of Pulau Gaya and the three smaller islands of Pulau Manukan just to the south (left). On the shoreline lies the town of Kota Kinabalu invisible in the haze. The coast is some 40 miles (60 km) distant from my shooting location.

So here’s the last of the Mount Kinabalu sunset series. The sun has now slipped below the horizon, it’s passing marked by the display of yellow, orange and red in the sky.
