Most of the ascent of Mound Kinabalu from the Timpohon Gate to the Laban Rata Guesthouse is a trek up a massive staircase. It might be the stairway to heaven but if you're not used to climbing like this for several hours (and who is really?) it can be quite a struggle.

Daily Photo – The Climb to Laban Rata

Laban Rata is pretty much at the altitude where the vegetation peters out and the base granite starts. The trek there is through the jungle/rainforest so it can be pretty warm and humid. Most of the climb that I recall was this seemingly endless zigzag of stairs cut into the side of the hill and shored up with wood or stone, without which the entire climb would be a muddy scramble.

Evening arrives as the sun sets on the summit of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Clouds gather around the mountain as the cooler night air moves in. Towards the middle of the image you can make out the three radio stations and above them, the Laban Rata Guesthouse. 1989.

Daily Photo – Mount Kinabalu

This is a view of Mount Kinabalu taken from the Park HQ in the evening. The sun has already set on the Park HQ but still illuminates the mountain top.

Another section of flowstone from one of the show caves in the Gunung Mulu National Park. I remain intrigued by the calcite curtain that appears to be growing up from the floor in the bottom of the photo.

Daily Photo – Last Mulu Cave Photo

This photo was taken close by the location of yesterday’s flowstone photo. One feature in this photo that I remain curious about is the small curtain-like calcite growth from the floor that separates the pools of water. My inner geologist and caver don’t have answers for that one so any ideas would be appreciated.

A 5 meter tall flowstone. Gunung Mulu National Park. 1989.

Daily Photo – More Flowstone

If I were shooting this today, I’d try to get a person or something else in the shot to provide some scale. I’d also seek to use off-camera flash from the side the provide more interesting shadows that better emphasize the wonderful textures of this flowstone.

As you near the exit of Deer Cave in Gunung Mulu National Part you get this view that looks like Abraham Lincoln's profile. It's an entirely natural rock formation that only looks like this from the one angle.

Daily Photo – Lincoln’s Profile at Deer Cave

As you walk around a bend in the trail on your way of of Deer Cave, you’re presented with this profile of Abraham Lincoln.

Photo is am HDR merge of seven slides showing the exit to Deer Cave, Gunung Mulu National Park. Note the curtain of water falling in the distance and the piles of bat guano in the mid ground. The colors in the foreground are due to reciprocity failure of the ISO 100 Fujichrome slide film I was using. Shots were hand-held, hence the softness. 1989.

Daily Photo – Deer Cave

The shot below is perhaps the classic Deer Cave shot. Mine is actually a seven-shot HDR – seven slides scanned and merged in Photomatix Pro.
