Elephant Rock

Daily Photo – Elephant Rock

So one of the most novel rock formations in the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada is Elephant Rock – to the extent it’s featured in a line drawing on the front of the park brochure (pdf). Elephant Rock is plainly visible from Route 169, a couple of miles or so east of the Clark Memorialnear the eastern entrance to the park. As I recall, there’s no pull-off on the road and there’s a hill and blind curve so […]

Bowl of Fire - Detail

Daily Photo – Bowl of Fire (detail)

So yesterday I posted a wide angle (17mm) shot of the Bowl of Fireand today I’m posting a detail. If you look at yesterday’s shot there are two outcrops of the red Aztec sandstone, one on either side of the frame. This is a detail from the right hand outcrop. Taken two minutes after yesterday’s shot, this was taken with an earlier version of the Canon 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM (B&H). Again, the exif data on this show shows the […]

Bowl of Fire - Wide

Daily Photo – Bowl of Fire (wide)

This is a wide angle view of the Bowl of Fire. As the crow flies, it’s about 30 miles east of Las Vegas to the north side of Northshore Road in the Lake Mead National Recreational Area. While the work ‘fire’ might lead some to think it’s volcanic in origin, the red rocks are actually a sandstone that contrasts with the surrounding gray limestones. There are a number of trails that take you right up to the rocks where a […]

Las Vegas at Dusk

Daily Photo – Las Vegas at Dusk

Ever since I had my own transport, I’ve taken off on these solo journeys – by car or motorcycle – to see what I could see. I was in Las Vegas in 2006 because my wife was attending a conference and I was tagging along. So while she was soaking up knowledge, I was soaking up vistas such as this one. On my way back from the Hoover Dam, instead of taking the direct, freeway, route, I sauntered north along […]

Hoover Dam

Daily Photo – Hoover Dam from the Air

Of course, no visit to the Hoover Dam is complete without an aerial view. Now you can get a view from the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. I don’t know if you’re allowed to stop on the bridge to take photos – probably not. As you can see in the lower left and lower right corners, the bridge was in the early stages of construction when I took this photo. Look at the cars winding down the roads […]
