The sun starts to dip below the horizon of the South China Sea in this photo taken in 1989 from Laban Rata on Mount Kinabalu. On the right you can make out the island of Pulau Gaya and the three smaller islands of Pulau Manukan just to the south (left). On the shoreline lies the town of Kota Kinabalu invisible in the haze. The coast is some 40 miles (60 km) distant from my shooting location.

In the mid-ground you can clearly make out the coastline at Kota Kinabalu, some 37 miles (60 km) distant from Laban Rata on Mount Kinabalu.

In this shot, the sun hangs just above the horizon of the South China Sea. About a quarter of the way up the frame you can make out the coast at Kota Kinabalu which is 37 miles (60 km) distant from where I was on Mount Kinabalu at Laban Rata.

Evening arrives as the sun sets on the summit of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Clouds gather around the mountain as the cooler night air moves in. Towards the middle of the image you can make out the three radio stations and above them, the Laban Rata Guesthouse. 1989.

This is a view of Mount Kinabalu taken from the Park HQ in the evening. The sun has already set on the Park HQ but still illuminates the mountain top.
