Fishing Boats off Phi Phi Island, Thailand

Daily Photo – Fishing Boats off Phi Phi Island

I can’t actually place where I took this photo but I’m thinking it’s more likely Koh Phi Phi Ley than Koh Phi Phi Don, largely because the photos around it in my collection show all the hallmarks of having been taken from a moving small boat – horizons far from level! I think this image shows the vertical scale of the limestone outcrops that form these islands.

A longtail boat full of tourists heads out of Ton Sai Bay, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Heading Out

I love the tight crop on this image that eliminates the sky and thereby accentuates the height of the limestone cliffs. You can just make out a small beach and a hut in the center of the photo. The aqua water is shallower than the blue water. If you look closely you can see a thin line of aqua on the far shore also. The ferries and fishing boats typically stayed in the blue water to avoid grounding.

Photo of Loh Dalam Bay, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Loh Dalam Bay 2

Having photographed the fishing boats tied up in Ton Sai Bay I walked back across the isthmus to Loh Dalam Bay and took this shot. The sun is on it’s way down – certainly within and hour of sunset. The boat on the left is the same boat I photographed earlier that day from the lookout point in my photo Loh Dalam Refractions.

Daily Photo – Ton Sai Boats

Having captured yesterday’s shot I walked out along the jetty to get a different angle on the fishing boats – a tighter framing. Below is the result rendered in black & white, and below that the color version. As an indication of how friendly I found the local people here, note the fisherman just left of center of the photo waving at me.

Ton Sai Jetty, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Ton Sai Jetty

Below is a view of how the jetty in Ton Sai Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don used to look. The crystal clear aqua water looks so inviting. This is a view to the south-west so looking at the way the sunlight plays on the limestone hills in the background, I would have taken this later in the afternoon.

Blyde River Nature Reserve

Daily Photo – Blyde River Nature Reserve

I drove this route a few times looking at my photo collection but my slides of the views from God’s Window don’t do justice to the scene I remember. Certainly one day I was up there the valleys and Lowveld to the east were shrouded by low clouds – because I was looking down on the top of them!
