A longtail boat full of tourists heads out of Ton Sai Bay, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Heading Out

I love the tight crop on this image that eliminates the sky and thereby accentuates the height of the limestone cliffs. You can just make out a small beach and a hut in the center of the photo. The aqua water is shallower than the blue water. If you look closely you can see a thin line of aqua on the far shore also. The ferries and fishing boats typically stayed in the blue water to avoid grounding.

Boats are moored a the jetty in Ton Sai Bay, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Morning in Ton Sai Bay 2

You can typically find several shots from a single location if you take the time to look around. You should also take advantage of zoom lenses which are easier to carry than multiple prime lenses. My current favorite is the Canon 28-300. It’s not as inconspicuous as the Nikon equivalent (there’s a Tamron for the Canon that’s more affordable) but I’m a bit of a Canon snob. Whatever the camera and whatever the lens manufacturer, the 28-300mm range is great for travel photography.

Ton Sai Bay, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Ton Sai Bay

Across the isthmus from Loh Dalam Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don is Ton Sai Bay. The water here is deeper so has a richer blue color when viewed from a height and a more vivid aqua color when viewed from the beach. This image was more of a stretch so it’s on the soft side but has almost a painterly feel to it. It’s again taken from the lookout point on the eastern part of the island looking pretty much south-west.

Loh Dalam Refractions, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Loh Dalam Refractions

Taken from the lookout on the eastern part of the island, the ship is beached on the sandy isthmus that joins the two parts of the island. The water here was really shallow – the two people on the right of the image are actually sitting down at this point, not standing. The varying depths of the water and the light ripples of the breeze driven waves are refracting the sunlight to give the rainbow effect of this image.

Loh Dalam Bay, Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand

Daily Photo – Loh Dalam Bay

Loh Dalam Bay is on the north side of the sandy isthmus that connects the two limestone outcrops that form Phi Phi Don. This photo was taken from the lookout on the eastern half of the island. I’m guessing I used my Tamron 500mm mirror lens for this photo as it was the longest lens I owned at the time.

Koh Phi Phi Don

Daily Photo – Koh Phi Phi Don

Back in the late 80’s there wasn’t a whole bunch of development on Koh Phi Phi Don, the largest of the Phi Phi Islands. The deeper bay is Ton Sai Bay to the south (left in this photo) so this is where the ferry boats pulled in to what was then a fairly circumspect pier. Loh Dalam Bay, the bay on the north, was quite shallow and at low water you could walk a long way out on the sand.
