Back in the late 80's when I made this trip, I couldn't swim. It would be another couple of months before I learned - spurred on in part by not being able to go snorkeling or diving in these waters. It seemed everyone was having so much fun! As a toddler, I almost drowned and had to be rescued by me father. If it hadn't been for my brother who was three at the time who ran off to tell my father that I'd fallen into the water tank, I'd probably have drowned.

I love the tight crop on this image that eliminates the sky and thereby accentuates the height of the limestone cliffs. You can just make out a small beach and a hut in the center of the photo. The aqua water is shallower than the blue water. If you look closely you can see a thin line of aqua on the far shore also. The ferries and fishing boats typically stayed in the blue water to avoid grounding.

Below is a view of how the jetty in Ton Sai Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don used to look. The crystal clear aqua water looks so inviting. This is a view to the south-west so looking at the way the sunlight plays on the limestone hills in the background, I would have taken this later in the afternoon.
