The sun has slipped below the horizon of the South China Sea in this photo taken in 1989 from Laban Rata on Mount Kinabalu. On the right you can make out the island of Pulau Gaya and the three smaller islands of Pulau Manukan just to the south (left). On the shoreline lies the town of Kota Kinabalu invisible in the haze. The coast is some 40 miles (60 km) distant from my shooting location.
