Daily Photo – Sand River Crossing


I think there’s something old-worldly, even timeless, about this image of a ford on the Sand River in South Africa.

The family on the bank to the right having a picnic, the mother watching over her children at the waters edge while a cow and two calves are crossing mid-river to a cattle herder on the left. Could be any river, anywhere in the world at any point in history.

Almost certainly I was standing on the Route 1 bridge over the river, looking to the west, when I took this photo. Below is a Black & White version.
