Today's photo gives quite a clear view of the surface strata across much of where we were surveying in brunei. This sand quarry was a few miles inland from Kuala Belait pretty much at the western end of the brunei coast. The sand is being extracted as a building material.
But you can quite clearly see the jungle growth and top three to four meters of organic material overlying a band of sand.
Most of my LVL work was to determine and map the boundary of the organic material to the first two distinct layers of sand. Consequently, most of my shots would only be sunk a couple of meters into the organic layer. The main crew, however, needed their shots placed down in to the sand – about six meters down.
Drilling shot holes was performed by means of ‘flushing' and I'll post so photos of ‘flushing' in the coming days.
But for this shot, though, I always wondered about the accidents these trucks must have been in that left their headlights, fenders and even hoods missing. Maybe their brakes were shot and they could only stop by crashing into things!
