Monthly Archives: May 2012 I took this picture of an Impala as we were driving towards a watering hole to watch the animals arrive at dusk. Like a lot of animals, they stop to check you out before deciding whether to run away or ignore you. Shortly after this photo, it decided to run away.

I was struck by the cloud formation at the higher altitude. Below it is another layer of thin clouds giving the patches with less clarity.  Whomp! I hit the cow pretty much dead center. It’s legs bucked and it’s body rolled up the hood and into the windshield. I saw it all in slow motion, not the split second it actually took.

This is a great post! I have come close to plowing into animals back in Canada but never hit. Now I know to make sure I never do! Anyway, a good recount of what happened, and that broken glass photo is awesome! And sorry about your colleague. I should forward this to some friends in Thailand where they regularly pile up a dozen people in the back of pick up trucks then drive like hell over the speed limit.

Their ship had run aground about 1.5 km west of Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point in Africa.

On that post I included a poem by Thomas Hardy. Hardy also wrote a poem about the Karoo:  What I find curious now though, is the dude in the sports coat and jeans. I’m guessing the waves crash against the rocks sending spray over the anglers. If that was the case, then I think Mr. Blue Jacket was tempting fate!

Like driving in New England, the names of the cities are familiar but there in the wrong order. So on this trip I passed through Newcastle, skirted Glencoe and then drove through Dundee.  I’d been humming along the dirt road that runs through the lower part of the frame when suddenly the hood (bonnet) of my Hilux just lifted up and crashed back into the windshield! I was stunned. Stunned and blinded. Where was the road? |
