Tag Archives: Topaz The traditional definition of a desert is based on a (lack of) rainfall figure – less than 250 mm (10 in.) rainfall per year. An alternative definition is a place that lacks sufficient vegetation to support human population. the English word desert comes from the Latin ‘desertum’ meaning an abandoned place.  I arrived before sun up and for quite a while I was alone, the only sound the chirping of birds and the occasional splash in the water. And then this cyclist appeared on the bridge. no comments  The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum was located in Cleveland ostensibly because DJ Alan Freed coined the term ‘Rock and Roll’ during his radio years with WJW-Radio in the city and because he helped organize the Moondog Coronation Ball on March 21, 1952 in the city, generally held as the first rock and roll concert. no comments  I was drawn to this image by the strong colors – the red of the brick, the green of the siding on the building and the yellow of the leaves on the tree. no comments  I’ve long been fascinated by reflections. I’m like a child seeing itself in a mirror for the first time and trying to make sense of what I see – familiar yet strange simultaneously. show 1 comment 
This is beautiful!!!! Love it……  I took this image from the eastern side of the Grand River, just north of the Pearl Street Bridge. I didn’t have my tripod with me so to steady the camera I braced it on the railing alongside the footpath. no comments  This view is from near the top of Upham hill looking north over Aldbourne Warren in the foreground, and Liddington Warren in the mid-ground to the clump of trees marking Liddington Hill. no comments  My wife and I thought it ironic that we should see a Virgin balloon having flown Virgin Atlantic but we were both thankful that Virgin Atlantic fly Boeing 747s and not balloons such as this! no comments  The Betsy Hotel has a neat rooftop deck for guests. From the loungers you can look out over the top of the palm trees to the ocean. Like the rooms overlooking the courtyard, the city sounds rise up and past you when you’re up on the deck. I took this image at shortly after 8:00… no comments  St. Martins sits on state highway 237S, about three miles south-west of Round Top, Texas. It’s billed on a sign by the road as the ‘smallest Catholic Church in the world’. no comments |

Currently parts of east anglia qualify as a desert, and summer has just finished here too, over 20 and no rain for weeks. The ditch along Lottage road is as dry as any desert gulch no road flooding this year, waiting for the Dabchick so that we can se when some nonegenarian tells us when, if ever, it last happened.
