Daily Photo – Boy Running

I took this shot while wandering across the isthmus between Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalam Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don. The boy was completely oblivious to my presence, fully engaged in his activity. He wasn’t going anywhere in particular, wasn’t playing with anyone else, just having carefree fun running around.

Daily Photo – Heading Out

I love the tight crop on this image that eliminates the sky and thereby accentuates the height of the limestone cliffs. You can just make out a small beach and a hut in the center of the photo. The aqua water is shallower than the blue water. If you look closely you can see a thin line of aqua on the far shore also. The ferries and fishing boats typically stayed in the blue water to avoid grounding.

Daily Photo – Morning in Ton Sai Bay 2

You can typically find several shots from a single location if you take the time to look around. You should also take advantage of zoom lenses which are easier to carry than multiple prime lenses. My current favorite is the Canon 28-300. It’s not as inconspicuous as the Nikon equivalent (there’s a Tamron for the Canon that’s more affordable) but I’m a bit of a Canon snob. Whatever the camera and whatever the lens manufacturer, the 28-300mm range is great for travel photography.

If I ever get the opportunity to reshoot this, I’d do it differently.

Daily Photo – Ton Sai Boats

Having captured yesterday’s shot I walked out along the jetty to get a different angle on the fishing boats – a tighter framing. Below is the result rendered in black & white, and below that the color version. As an indication of how friendly I found the local people here, note the fisherman just left of center of the photo waving at me.

Daily Photo – Ton Sai Jetty

Below is a view of how the jetty in Ton Sai Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don used to look. The crystal clear aqua water looks so inviting. This is a view to the south-west so looking at the way the sunlight plays on the limestone hills in the background, I would have taken this later in the afternoon.

Daily Photo – Ton Sai Bay

Across the isthmus from Loh Dalam Bay on Koh Phi Phi Don is Ton Sai Bay. The water here is deeper so has a richer blue color when viewed from a height and a more vivid aqua color when viewed from the beach. This image was more of a stretch so it’s on the soft side but has almost a painterly feel to it. It’s again taken from the lookout point on the eastern part of the island looking pretty much south-west.

Daily Photo – Koh Phi Phi Don

Back in the late 80′s there wasn’t a whole bunch of development on Koh Phi Phi Don, the largest of the Phi Phi Islands. The deeper bay is Ton Sai Bay to the south (left in this photo) so this is where the ferry boats pulled in to what was then a fairly circumspect pier. Loh Dalam Bay, the bay on the north, was quite shallow and at low water you could walk a long way out on the sand.
