I recently had the opportunity to photograph the interior of a house decorated by my wife, Karen Davis, of Karen Davis Design. The house was remodeled and extended by Artisan Brothers of Sugar land.
Photographing interiors is a new field for me, I'm more comfortable with exteriors, but then pushing on the boundaries of our comfort zones is how we grow and learn. This gallery is a small sample from a half-day on location. With little time available to shoot there was not a great deal of opportunity to wait for the right light or to try different lighting setups. Where fill light was necessary I used one or more Canon 580EXII Speedlites, diffused through a Sto-Fen Omni Bounce on the Speedlite and a Lastolite shoot-through umbrella to soften the light and prevent harsh shadows.[ad name=”post”] I would like to thank Ed Wolkis author of the book, “How to take photos that move houses” for sharing his expertise in the field of photographing interiors in such an open and accessible manner. His book is available from my bookstore on Amazon. In the past I might have been tempted to hand-hold the camera but for these I used a tripod and cable release. Most of the images are composites of multiple exposures, combined using Photoshop. And, taking my lead from Ed, I added a fire into one of images rather than show the empty fireplace.
