Quite why this particular combe picked up the moniker of Hellscombe is lost to me. It doesn’t look particularly hellish.

[...] the Four Barrows are on the ridge that separates Aldbourne Warren from North Farm. In this photo you can only see three of them, the fourth is hidden behind the stand of trees on [...]  A little way north up the Atlantic Coast from Cape Town is the beach community of Sunset Beach. On the day we went up there they were having a windsurfing (sailboarding? – Anyone know the difference? Anyone care?) competition that we stayed and watched for a while.  Late afternoon and a farm worker pulls a harrow across a field before a stand of trees. The trees all tilt to the right showing the direction of the prevailing winds. Dust hangs in the air behind the tractor.  This sunset was taken from our camp near Delmas which is about 40 miles east of Johannesburg. Looking back, I don’t recall mosquitoes being a particular problem, despite the often wet camp sites.

[...] an example of the flooded trash ground we often found ourselves camping on in South [...]  This photo is also an HDR from three slide scans. Again, I’d retained in my slide collection three versions of this scene, each about 1EV in separation. So I scanned all three and then blended them in Photomatix to get this result.  This photo is actually an HDR made from three different slides. I happened to have a -1, 0, +1 EV set of three slides for this scene so rather than just use the scan of one of them, I decided to take scans of all three and run them through Photomatix to get this result.  Of course, no great natural vista is truly complete without some form of man-made scar and this is no exception – the radio mast is five miles away from my location.  I drove this route a few times looking at my photo collection but my slides of the views from God’s Window don’t do justice to the scene I remember. Certainly one day I was up there the valleys and Lowveld to the east were shrouded by low clouds – because I was looking down on the top of them!
